Production Area – Ladismith
Spera and Cerasus are situated in the Hoeko Valley, 15km east of the town Ladismith, also called the Lady of the Little Karoo. The Hoeko Valley is known as one of the best Apricot production areas in South Africa, and is also the birthplace of the renowned Afrikaans poet and author C.J. Langenhoven – best known for writing the former national anthem “Die Stem” (The Calling). C.J. Langenhoven‘s mother died five days after his birth in 1873, so he was brought up by his father’s brother, who was married to his mother’s sister, who lived on Spera Farm. It was also here that he received his first education in a small farm school. The Van der Merwes restored this historical place and today you can sit at CJ Langenhoven’s desk and relive one of his school days 134 years ago.
